From Dave and Jackie (neighbourhood friends) 8th June 2011

Most people will know Richard as a man of many talents. However, few will be aware that it was in the field of road building that he exhibited true excellence. Indeed, he did more for local road construction than John Loudon McAdam achieved nationally in his lifetime. Richard pioneered a unique road surface incorporating strategically placed railway sleepers rendering access completely unsuitable for heavily ladened, neighbouring builders vans. It was a resounding success and although it achieved little financially it gave him, his family and neighbourhood friends immense pleasure watching vehicles attempting to negotiate his well thought out elaborate system. This surface remains to this day – a legacy and testament to his skills and resolve!
